Subject

Inari-oroshi

One who brings Inari down — a medium who works by having the fox deity enter them, and who prays on a client’s behalf. A collection of debunked wonders from the 1890s prints a police item from a Kobe paper about a couple in this trade arrested for the money-doubling trick: they asked around a village until they found a man known to be devout, told him a particular Inari had come down into them, had him wrap forty yen in white paper and set it before the god, came daily to pray, and at some point replaced the notes with old newspaper. What drew official attention was not the claim but their spending. The charge was theft.
