Lucky Objects

The things sold and given at the turning of the year: the arrow with no bow, the rake, the painted board. They are the most visible part of Japanese custom and the least written about, and where the records do exist they tend to show a market stall rather than a rite — and, in at least one case, Edo writers already arguing about what the name of the thing meant.
