The giant skeleton — the one that rattles as it walks, with the eyes still in the sockets. It is the one creature on this site with a byline. It was published by Saitō Morihiro in the November 1966 issue of a supplement to a girls’ comic magazine, and he is reported to have said he took it from a British castle ghost introduced to Japanese readers the year before. The famous print of a colossal skeleton over a ruined palace is Kuniyoshi’s, from the mid-1840s, and shows Masakado’s daughter conjuring against a warrior — and even there the single giant skeleton is Kuniyoshi’s own change to a novel that had many.
