The queen of Wa, set up as ruler by countries that had been at war with one another, and known from a single short passage in the court histories of third-century China. She served what the Chinese historians called the way of the spirits, was seldom seen, sent envoys across the sea, and was buried under a great mound whose site is unknown. The oldest Japanese chronicle quotes that foreign account in its notes and never uses her name.
