Mukade

The centipede. Japan has a real one — the ōmukade is large, fast, armoured and venomous enough to be a medical problem, and it lives under stones and in roof cavities and comes indoors. That is what separates it from most of the company it keeps in the English catalogues: a fox-spirit is an idea about a fox, and a mukade is a specific animal that was already in the house. In the old telling it is not a bug grown large but the owner of a mountain, and the remedy recorded against it is not a weapon but a direction — a sign drawn three times in the air toward the side it came from.
