The ghost who counts plates: a servant killed over a missing dish from a household’s heirloom set, who rises from the well, reaches nine and never ten. She is in prose by 1758, when a “true record” moved the household from Harima to Banchō in Edo, and in pictures by 1779, when Toriyama Sekien drew her and titled the plate not with her name but with her action. The famous modern play of 1916 contains no ghost at all. The well shown to visitors at Himeji Castle acquired her name within the last hundred years.
