The palace under the sea, and the stories of people taken to it. The oldest of them, recorded in 720, does not call it that: it sends the fisherman to Hōrai, the Chinese island of the immortals, and then declines to tell the rest, referring the reader to a volume that has not survived. A poem of the same century ends with the man dead; a provincial gazetteer of the same period ends with his body going up on the wind. The princess, the dragon palace and the jewelled box arrive in the later retellings, and none of the three earliest texts has any of them.
