Subject

Zashiki-warashi

The child that lives in the good room of an old house. In the 1910 collection that made it known it occupies two items and no more: in the first it is a boy, seen in a corridor, and the house it lodges in prospers without effort; in the second it is two girls, met on a road as they leave, and the house they leave loses twenty-odd people in a day to poisonous mushrooms. Two consecutive entries, opposite outcomes, no attempt to reconcile them. The bobbed hair, the red face and the pranks are not in that book.
