Subject

Akaneburi

The grime-licker, said to live in old bathhouses. What is interesting about it is the question an Edo dialogue book asks: not whether it exists, but whether its name makes sense. The answer given is that everything feeds on what it was generated from — a fish generated from water feeds on water, a louse generated from filth feeds on filth — so a creature generated out of accumulated grime-vapour must necessarily sustain itself by licking grime.
