Bakeneko 化け猫
The changing cat, and the best known of Japan’s cat yokai. An ordinary household cat that has crossed a threshold — usually through age, or through the weight of what it has watched — and gained the power to walk upright, mimic a human voice, take a human shape, or handle fire. It does not arrive from another world. It has been asleep on the warm boards the whole time.
