The thing that comes alongside a boat at night and asks to borrow something. The standard word is funayūrei, ship ghost, but the fishing villages had their own: ayakashi in northern Kyūshū, mōjabune in the north-east, mayoibune, inadakase, toboshi, ugume, a dozen more, one or two per stretch of coast. Some of the names mean the dead and some mean a light on the water. What they share is not a description but an instruction: it will ask for a ladle or a bailer, and you must knock the bottom out before you hand it over, because otherwise it will use it to fill your boat with the sea.
