Nine tales of the young Abe no Seimei — the fox-born boy who became the most famous diviner of the Heian court.
Every legend of Abe no Seimei begins before the name: a ruined house at the edge of the fields, a white fox hunted through a forest of shrines, a debt that cannot be repaid in one lifetime — and a thirteen-year-old boy who can see what his parents cannot.
Through apprenticeship, divination, loss, and ordeal, the boy moves toward the name by which the legends will remember him. The volume closes in another voice: the oldest surviving account of Seimei, recorded nearly nine hundred years ago, with its night procession of demons and the shutters of a house that move without a human hand.
